Youths Protest Killing Of Taxi Driver In Rivers

Paul Obiajunwo, Port Harcourt

The youths  of Ogbogoro community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State have invaded Ozuoba Police Divisional Headquarters in the  area following the murder of a yet to be identified taxi driver by armed men believed to operatives of Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

The alleged SARS officers were also accused of shooting  a four year old boy and injured several traders in Ogbogoro market where the incident happened.

It was gathered that the SARS officers had visited the area to allegedly make some arrest and only opened fire shooting indiscriminately.

A source who witnessed the incident noted that the stray bullet from the supposed security men picked the little boy, who has been rushed to hospital for treatment.

The source from the community said the sporadic shooting from the armed men believed to be SARS operatives forced many inhabitants to scamper for safety and leaving several persons with various degrees of injury.

Another source who gave his name as Simple noted that the SARS operatives escaped when the community youths rushed out to intervene in the situation.

Simple said: “SARS operatives came around Ogbogoro market that they are on special operation and started shooting anyhow and people were running. Several people got injury.

“Unfortunately, a taxi driver that did not know what was happening ran into the shooting and they shot him directly. The driver died there immediately, and when the youths of the community tried to intervene the SARS officers ran away.

“A young driver also died and some people came and opened the car and brought out his children who were in the car. Nobody was informed of their operation. They just drove to that place and started shooting.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Command, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni distanced SARS from the incident.

Omoni said: “Our attention was drawn to the development. I can tell you authoritatively that they are not SARS officers. The same uniform men were sighted the same day around Odili road in Abuloma where they attempted to kidnap somebody.

“They were attacked there and they took to flight, only to surface in Ogbogoro where they had a scuffle with youths of that area. They are not police officers from our command. We are still on their hunt.”
