Rector of the Edo State Polytechnic, Usen, Professor Abiodun Falodun, has averred that he is committed to repositioning the institution to be a world class polytechnic.
He made the assertion on Thursday on the occasion of the 1st Eminent Scholar Lecture Series to commemorate the 2017/18 Matriculation ceremony of the institution.
Professor Falodun commended the state governor, Godwin Neghoghase Obaseki, for his unwavering support to the development and advancement of the polytechnic.
The Rector said that it was his desire to ensure that “to ensure that students admitted into the various programmes of this polytechnic study in a conducive environment and complete their programmes as at when due.
“Management is however, not unmindful of some of the challenges facing our students in the course of going through their programme in the polytechnic.”
Going further, he stressed:”We believe strongly in qualitative and functional education that will produce graduates who will be job creators and not job seekers. Graduates that will fit into the industrial needs of the state and national programmes.”
In the first lecture entitled ‘Right to Education and Work: Panacea for Insecurity in Nigeria’ which was delivered by Professor Eddy Erhagbe, the Dean, Faculty of Arts, University of Benin, he highlighted the evil of tertiary institutions producing unemployable graduates thereby creating unemployment in the country.
He advised schools to emphasise practical rather than theoretical programmes. He therefore called on all tiers of government to encourage education and improve learning environment in the schools.
In the second lecture entitled: ‘Polytechnic Education: Gateway for Youth Empowerment, Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Economic Development’ delivered by Professor Christain Oduma, he challenged schools to encourage entrepreneurs in schools so that graduate can be self reliant rather than depending on government and others for employment.
