President Goodluck Jonathan has assured Nigerians of a robust economic development, when the trans-Atlantic road network is implemented.
Jonathan, who was represented by the Vice President Arc. Namadi Sambo, said the road network that will be from Lagos/Abidjan/Dakar and Lagos/Mombasa roads, which are various stages of implementation is a program that will lead to appropriate economic development in Africa, stating that an efficient road transport network is in itself an engine that drives economic growth in the country.
He said this at the opening ceremony of the first International Road Federation (IRF) Africa Regional congress in Abuja, with tge themed, ‘harnessing
Africa’s transportation potential’ the role of the Stakeholder.
He said: “We are putting in place best practices to drive public, private sector partnership in road sector development and other areas, our overall aim is to provide better and safer roads for Nigerians, so as to enhance social economic development.
“The critical trans- African road project such as the Lagos,, Abidjan, Dakar and the Lagos Mombasa road at various stages of implementation is a program for
appropriate economic development in Africa.”
“The conference was an indication that the world community takes development very seriously. This event is the first of its kind in Africa which is an indication that the world wide community takes development very seriously.
“We also believe that the very huge development gap that exist in Africa creates a very huge opportunity for investment, we have great hopes that the outcome of this congress would impact positively on the road sector, in the region of Africa as well as the whole world,” the president added.
Jonathan also said the government will do all to ensure an efficient road transport network which in itself is an engine which drives economic growth, these will be achieved through an enhance government participation, the private sector and multilateral development institutions.
On his part, the Minister of Works, Arc. Mike Onolomemen said: “The regional conference would not have come at a more opportune time, considering my administrations irrevocable commitment to the developmentof the nation’s road infrastructure nationwide. Use the conference in addressing the challenges hindering the full development of our road networks
“You know we are passing through a challenging phase in our national development, government is doing everything possible to ensure security and our passion for the safety of the country will never falter,” he stated.
