The action of the National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and the ruling party by setting up a committee to look into the political situation in Taraba state has been described by a political and social critic from Adamawa state, Daniel Richards  as a case of witch-hunting.

He said this in Abuja on Tuesday. The party had few weeks ago setup a committee headed by Senator Hope Uzodinma to look into the political situation in the state, occasioned by the long absence of the governor, Danbaba Suntai, who sustained fatal injury in a crash last year.

His words: “Of course this is foul play.  This is not an allegation. Why not do the same to Enugu state governor, Cross River state governor and late Yar’ Adua.

It’s the same PDP, it’s the same constitution they are operating. It is not an alleged foul play; it is foul play in this matter. And I challenge Bamanga and his crew, let them come clean and tell Nigerian people the reason why they are selecting Danbaba Suntai.

“Whatever PDP laws… which I don’t know, maybe if any of their elected members is sick, they have jurisdiction over him, I don’t know, but we have a Constitution that takes care of this.

“There is foul play in this, and I challenge Bamanga to tell me who gave him this power to select the governors he will go and investigate their well beings, with the hope of removing them, It’s not an allegation.

“If we keep going this way, one day we will wake up to see that there is no constitution to obey, because we are applying different rules at different times for different people.”

On the issue of emergency rule in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states, Richards emphasised that a total emergency rule should be declared on the states.

He said that he welcomes the one declared by former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Plateau state, where Joshua Dariye was removed from office for six months, adding that the Constitution is explicit on emergency rule and it should be applied.

“If I was Joshua Dariye, I will now go and say I was short-changed for 6 months. Joshua Dariye can go to court to say he was short-changed because it’s the same reason that he was removed that its being applied.

“Fayose of Ekiti was removed also, which means they will now demand for the restoration of the time they were not in office.

We have to agree on how we are going to operate our constitution. But if we start distorting our constitution to favour certain people, it means the constitution of the country will be invalid.”
