Subsidy For Kaduna Farmers

Kaduna state governor, Mukthar Ramalan Yero has said that farmers in the state are top enjoy subsidy on farm input under the State Agriculture Support Scheme and the Growth Enhancement Programme (GES) of the Federal Government.
The governor who spoke at the flag-off of the distribution of assorted subsidized fertilizers to farmers in the state also said that the farmers are to enjoy about 60 percent subsidy on fertilisers for farmers in the state for the 2014 farming season.
Breakdown of the subsidy declared by Yero indicates that farmers are to pay, N2,500 per bag of NPK fertilizer as against market price of N6,250, Urea fertilizer goes for N2,400 as against N6,000 market price, SSP is to be sold at N1,960 as against N4,900 market price while Organic Micro Nutricit goes for N1,960 as against N4,900 market price.
The governor said that in addition to the 60% subsidy, beneficiaries under the GES Programme are to procure each bag of fertilizer at N2,700 and get one for free jointly paid at 50-50 ratio by the Federal and State Governments.
According to him “the State and Local Government Councils have purchased 20,492 metric tons of the commodities to all farmers in the State at a total sum of N2.399 billion. Chairmen of Local Government Councils should ensure that the assorted fertilizers within their domain are sold to farmers at 60% subsidy and further ensure that no fertilizer is diverted. A Monitoring Team from the State Government will go round to monitor and take records of all distributions and sales of the commodity to farmers.”
The Governor expressed worry over incessant clashes between pastoralists and farmers in the State saying “as an intervention programme, Government has approved the sum of N45 million for the rehabilitation, expansion and improvement of existing facilities in the Grazing Reserves, in addition to purchase of drugs for control of animal diseases and rehabilitation of Veterinary Clinics. This action is aimed at generally upgrading the livestock sub-sector in the State.”
He said further that his administration remains committed to providing support to farmers in the state to actualize its objective of transforming agriculture from its previous simplistic consideration as a development project, to a major contributor to the economy, adding that the government has identified commercial agriculture as the sure means of providing food and jobs for our growing population in this country.
According to him, there is urgent need for diversification of the economy as we can no longer rely solely on oil revenue, stressing that “our aim therefore in providing support to farmers to tap into the huge job potentials and food security that agriculture provides. This will also provide alternative sources of revenue generation as well as raise our Gross Domestic Product (GDP)”.
Commissioner for Agriculture, Isaac Bodams said the State Government has introduced comprehensive approach to agricultural revival in the State, adding that as part of the programme, the state government has provided 15,000 improved seedlings of Palm Trees in Kubacha Nursery for distribution to farmers in 2014.
The Commissioner said the State Government is also providing support to fishery with the construction of a hatchery at the cost of N4.7 million; the Kaduna State Ministry of Agriculture now sales fingerlings and table size fish.
