Sheriff Suspends Edo Exco, Sets Up Caretaker Committee

…100 Sheriffs cannot dissolve Edo exco- state Chairman

Chris Steven, Abuja

Leadership crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is yet to abate, as the embattled National Chairman of the party, Ali Modu Sheriff on Saturday suspended the executive of Edo state chapter of party.

But in a swift reaction, the Chairman of Edo state chapter of the party, Dan Orbih boasted that 100 of Sheriffs cannot dissolve the state executive as he is no longer the Chairman and also not a member of the party, but on a mission for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to destroy PDP.

Sheriff, in a statement he signed alongside the former National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo, said, “National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has, in line with the provisions of section 31 (2) (e) of the PDP constitution, suspended the Edo State Executive Committee of the party.”

Sheriff added that the suspension, which was part of the decision taken at the NWC meeting of June 21, 2016  sequel to various petitions based  on allegations of irregularities arising from the last state congresses that sought to elect State Executive Committee for the chapter.

“The National Working Committee (NWC) decided to suspend the Committee instead of outright dissolution to enable it investigate the allegations and come out with a fair and just decision,” he said.

He said that the NWC, has, however approved the appointment of a Caretaker Committee to manage the affairs of the State chapter of the party for the constitutional stipulated period of three months.

The Committee has Chief Ebenezer Alabi as Chairman and Barr. Zealiwe Edmund as Secretary. Other members are Ehimekpen Okharedia, Mrs. Melody Ekunne Osagie, Blessing Agbabaku, Negerese Berry, Hon Daniel Ohiole Asekhame and Mr.Dan Omozokpai.

Reacting, Orbih said that Sheriff’s action has shown that he is not a true member of PDP, adding, “by his pronouncements and his actions, he has shown the whole world that he is not a true member of PDP.”

The state Chairman added that Sheriff “is on a mission designed by the party in government that is being executed by him.”

He said: “For us in Edo State PDP, we will ignore the rantings of Sheriff and face the business of defeating Adams Oshiomhole and his surrogate, that is, their APC candidate.

“Let me quickly remind Sheriff that we, members of the National Executive, were the ones that appointed him as an acting chairman.

“He was never elected as chairman of the party and he should stop arrogating powers that he doesn’t possess to himself.

“Hundred Sheriffs cannot dissolve the Edo exco as he is no longer the acting chairman of the party. The only body that is constitutionally empowered by the party to carry out the functions of the national executives of the party today is that of the Makarfi-led national executive, which by law is the national executive that is in place.

“The convention remains the highest decision making organ of our party, the PDP.

Arising from the decision of the national convention that was held in Port Harcourt, Sheriff stopped to be an acting national chairman. Let me emphasize the word ‘acting’ because he was never an elected National Chairman.

“At the time we appointed Sheriff to act as the national chairman, we gave him a mandate that should last for three months and at the end of that three months, we never renewed his mandate.

“So, the convention with its overwhelming power, dissolved the executive national organ of the party and appointed a caretaker committee that will oversee the affairs of the party pending when we hold the next national convention to elect the officials.

“So, Sheriff is merely exercising his foul mouth to make illegal pronouncements that can never be obeyed by any person in our party.”

He, however advised Sheriff to steer clear from Edo PDP and face his political integration in Borno where since he left office as governor has been a hotbed of political crisis.
