Barely 24 hours after Nigeria joined the rest of the world to mark the world press freedom day, the Nigerian Senate banned media houses from recording its plenary session.
Clerk of the Senate, Nelson Ayewoh who handed down the ban to journalists covering the Red Chamber said the use of camera to cover legislative sessions is a new form of terrorism
The Senate recently began a review of media regulations covering the senate activities, banning the cameramen from the chamber as no cameraman from broadcast media was allowed to cover the Thursday’s proceeding.
When asked for reasons, it was learnt from the Clerk that the measure is based on allegations that cameramen are causing nuisance and disturbing Senate activities.
However, journalists covering the National Assembly have described the move unacceptable and incomprehensible, and called for press solidarity in rejecting the Senate’s decision. They also called for a return to the status quo ante?.
