Saraki Says Drug Abuse In The North Is Worrisome

Bukola Saraki, President of the Senate says drug menace in the Northern part of Nigeria is worrisome noting that the time has come for the problem to be addressed.

Saraki writes on Twitter on Friday that he will push for the review of all relevant laws on drug abuse which according to him will curb the widespread misuse of illegal and unsanitary substances.

He adds that the Senate will engage with all relevant stakeholders as we initiate this process.

“I am particularly worried about the drug menace in the Northern part of the country. It is time that we recognize this problem and addresses it in a sensible manner,” Saraki writes

“I will be pushing for the National Assembly to review all relevant laws on drug abuse. This will help to curb the widespread misuse of illegal and unsanitary substances. The Senate will engage with all relevant stakeholders as we initiate this process”

Nelson Ochekpe , a university lecturer and Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, had in April 2017 disclosed that 60 percent of substance abuses in the country is perpetrated in the Northern part, particularly Kano State.

He made the disclosure while delivering a lecture on the effects of drug abuse at the opening of a two-day sensitization lecture to eradicate ill-vices perpetrated by students of higher learning, held in University of Jos.
