Rivers Residents Reflect, Assess Opportunity In Osinbajo’s Visit

Paul Obiajunwo, Port Harcourt

The Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo’s visit to Rivers State has come and gone but some of the stakeholder and residents of the state have continued to reflect and argue on the opportunities that come with such August visit.

Though, the visit of the Acting President almost draw a battle line between the ruling People’s Democratic Party ( PDP) in the state and its rival the All Progressive Congress (APC) where both parties accused each other of trying to hijack the visit.

In a separate reaction yesterday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital some the party chieftains and residents who spoke to The post said Rivers people stand to benefit  more  from the visit of the Acting President than what politicians intend to gain from the visit.

APC Chieftain, Chief Chimbiko Akarolo   said the visit of the Acting President,  Prof. Osibanjo was  not for PDP or APC but for the interest of peace in  Niger Delta region.

He described those who are trying to hijack the visit as “cowards”, adding that they have nothing to offer rather than to create confusion over the visit of Acting President.

Akarolo said: “The visit hopefully has given the Acting President firsthand information of what is happening in the region, this time the visit was for Rivers State.  Since he had met with stakeholders at the town hall meeting and issues were raised and presented to him and those issues would no longer be news.

“ Probably, the visit will  correlate  with what he has on the table and them he will have a better road map on how to handle the issue of Niger Delta. His coming also boosts the morale of Rivers people and that of our party, APC.

“Whether the government in power is that of opposition party or not, his visit was for Rivers people and I believe it would bring more development for the state.  As far as I am concern there is no development at the local level. It is so lopsided, they are running the local government illegally they have no idea of how the government is being managed.

Another chieftain from PDP, Chief   Nnorum Francis, said the visit of the Acting President to Rivers State gave him (Prof.Osibanjo) the opportunity to know that governor Wike has been unjustly maltreated by Federal government who he said is making thing difficult for him.

He said the Acting President had noticed that Rivers State is safe for investment contrary to some report in the media about insecurity in the state.

Hon. Celestine AkpoBari, the National Leader, Ogoni Solidarity  Forum (OSF) said it would be wrong for anybody to politicize the gains of the  Acting President’s visit, stressing that the visit is purely for the interest of peace and development of the region.

AkpoBari said the visit will educate the Acting President more on the socio-economic problems facing the oil- reach region.

“It was a town hall meeting.  The visit will enable the Acting President to understand clearly some of the pressing issues confronting the region. This is because different groups, including community leaders presented their problems before the Acting President. I think we are in support of his visit.

“The Buhari administration is a serious government and I believe that the Acting President visit is a welcome development. Having seen the seriousness he had displayed during this period he is acting for the President. It shows that he is not a politicians, he was not here to please people. He has serious issues to address.”
