The All Progressives Congress in Oyo state has called for the immediate resignation of the lawmaker representing Bayelsa East Senatorial district, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, from the upper legislative chamber of the National Assembly following the reports of an engineer with the Bayelsa State Water Board, Peter Ogiero, committing suicide over his 13-month unpaid salary by the state government.
Senator Murray-Bruce, who hails from the same community as the late Ogiero, was a leading voice in escalating the economic crisis issue which rocked the State of Osun earlier in the year when he (Murray-Bruce) went as far as offering to donate part of his allowances to the workers who were being owed arrears of salaries by Governor Rauf Aregbesola.
In a statement issued today in Ibadan by its Director of Publicity and Strategy, Olawale Sadare, the APC in Oyo State described Senator Murray-Bruce as a failed politician and a bigoted attention-seeker who was not fit to remain in the hallowed Chamber of the Senate in view of the latest development which has exposed him to the whole world.
“We read about the unfortunate incident of the death of Engineer Peter Ogiero, an employee of the Bayelsa State Government who had to take his own life as a result of frustration on account of the inability of Governor Seriake Dickson to pay him for 13 months.
We are stupefied that this could happen in a state like Bayelsa with an enviable opportunity of fat allocations on account of its oil-producing status and yet, some political actors would maintain sealed lips days after the ugly incident.
“One is mindful of the fact that Bayelsa State, under the control of the Peoples Democratic Party, should have no cause to owe any member of its sizeable workforce and at the same time utilize the enormous resources at the disposal of Governor Dickson to provide adequate dividends of democracy to a population of just a million people or thereabout. Yet, an hapless citizen had to resort to suicide due to neglect by some people at the helm of affairs.
“While the case of Ogiebo might just be one among the many workers and residents who were being deprived of their rights by the PDP administration in Bayelsa State, we challenge the likes of Senator Murray-Bruce to tender a public apology over the unfortunate incident and resign from the Senate.
This became imperative on account of the hypocritical roles played by the lawmaker in the wake of the wage crisis which affected the State of Osun recently.
“It is recalled that Senator Murray-Bruce resorted to mocking the people and government of the south west state by painting the picture of a failed state under the watch of Ogbeni Aregbesola.
The PDP Senator took an advantage of the situation and turned himself into an emergency aid advocate as well as a comical philanthropist through the mass media. But sadly, the same man could not do anything to rescue his own kinsman in his Constituency with any token until Ogiebo had to die in such a pathetic manner.
Apparently, Murray-Bruce had a log of wood in his own eye before seeking to remove the speck in another man’s eye, and with this development, he should return the mandate of the people” APC said in the statement
