Following the early Saturday morning attack on Senator Dino Melaye, representing Kogi West Zone in the upper chamber, while in his home to celebrate the Easter holiday, the Police have reportedly arrest seven suspects.
In a tweet on his personal twitter handle, Melaye, 43, said the suspects were “arrested at the residence of Taofik Isa and a jeep loaded with Ammunitions. Jeep now in the custody of DC Crime and investigation.”
Following reports of the early morning attack in which over 200 bullets were reportedly fired at his country home at Ayetoro-Gbede in Ijumu Local Government, destroying the main building and two cars packed within the compound, the Senator accused Isa, chairman of Ijumu Local Government in the state and a staunch supporter of Alhaji Yahaya Bello, the state governor of masterminding the assassination attempt.
But Isa, according to a report denied the allegation, saying he would not resort to violence in his running battle with Melaye, which resulted from his urging the Senator “to stop villifying the state governor.”
He had challenged his accuser to prove his allegation, stressing that “I’m a democrat and law abiding. I challenge Dino to prove his case.”
According to Melaye who put pictures of a visit to his home by the Deputy Commission of Police (Operations) who heads an investigation committee, and Area Commander of Kabba, where he showed them the gun shots on his Caravan. The committee, set up by the Police Commission, Wilson Inalegwu, is to unravel those behind the attack.
Recalling the attack, Melaye said: “At about midnight, we started hearing gunshots. They fired more than 200 rounds of bullet into the house. This attempt to kill me will not stop me from speaking the truth.” Dino said.
“If I speak the truth, I will die, if I lie, I will die. I’ve decided to speak the truth and die. I’m not afraid of death. I only respect men, I don’t fear them.”
“I am championing an administrative course. I will continue to speak and be the voice to the voiceless. I’m not deterred; I remain resolute to make Kogi better. Nothing will stop me from coming home.”
