The South-South unit of the Women for Change and Development Initiative, an initiative of Dame Patience Jonathan has been opened in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The initiative by the First Lady is aimed at empowering and giving women stronger voice in nation building.
At the unauguration of the regional office on Thursday women groups from all the 23 Local Governments areas in Rivers welcomed and thanked Dame Jonathan for her commitment to the cause of women with her pet empowerment project.
Among other achievements, Secretary of the initiative, Linda Somiri, noted that the era of the First Lady has helped to earn the 35% Affirmative Action for women in leadership.
In her speech on the occasion, the First Lady reiterated her passion for improving lives among the women as they play significant roles on the home front, adding that she would never cease to empower them.
Among the initiative’s package for women in Rivers, Dame Jonathan revealed that 60 women from each local government area and NGOs would be empowered with sewing, grinding and cassava milling machines among others.
