Paul Obiajunwo, Port Harcourt

There was panic yesterday in Rivers State as part of a bridge on the East-West road Akpajo axis of the road in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State caved in.

The bridge which is popularly called Okulu-Aleto bridge was said to have collapsed while commuters were plying the road.

It was gathered that there was much fear following the development, although no live was lost in the incident.

A commuter,  Mr. Bright Onu, noted that the section of the bridge caved in the morning, adding the constant pressure by heavy vehicles may have contributed to the collapse.

Onu worried that the section of the road in the area was in total disrepair and called on the Federal Government to give due attention to the road.

Another eyewitness,  John Echendu said the youths in the area are seriously unhappy over the effect of the incident to the economy of the area.

He said  that the development has further escalated the gridlock already being experienced on Akpjo axis of the road.

“All the vehicles plying to and fro  in the area to Port Harcourt now use a part of way of the Eleme east west road. Though there was no casualty. The incident just happened and the only miracle is that no bus or vehicle was on top of it.”

Some of the residents of the area who spoke to The Nation pleaded with the Federal government to urgently respond to their cries, adding that any further delay would bring suffering to the area.
