Oyo Police Nabs Soldier, 17 Others For Robbery, Counterfeiting

The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abiodun Odude, on Thursday claimed that men of his command has during the months of November and December, arrested about 18 criminals for various criminal offences.

An Army Corporal, Akpan Edet, of the 81, Batallion, Mokola was arrested with four others for hijacking a fuel-laden truck along Akobo Road, Iwo Road, Ibadan.

According to CP. Odude, the gang led by the soldier clad in military camouflage at about 9.30pm on November 17, 2017 hijacked a truck, with registration. No ABJ 132 CA and abducted the driver and his assistant to Omi Adio, a village outside Ibadan.

The truck was later driven to Akure/Ilesha Rd, by the criminals in order to dispose it illegally.

Luck, however, ran out on them when the victims were rescued by people of the community, who raised the alarm .

The gang members were subsequently arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery squad of the state police.

Other criminals paraded by the State Police Commissioner include an employee of a Chinese national, who had on November 27, 2017, with the aid of two others, absconded with 6 trucks and a Toyota Camry car, valued at 66 Million Naira, belonging to his master who had travelled out of the country.

The gang was said to have sold the vehicles to a criminal receiver in Kaduna for twenty Million Naira.

All the vehicles were later recovered and the members of the gang arrested by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

A 40 year old, dismissed police woman, Mrs Alimat Kemi , Mustapha, was on December 15, 2017, arrested for impersonation and obtaining under false pretences.

The mother of three was said to have been arrested by officers of the Owode-Ogbomoso Police Division, on December 15, 2017 after she fraudulently purchased electronics, worth about six hundred thousand Naira from a trader around Takie Isale area of Ogbomoso.

The woman was dismissed from the Police Force in 2007 and it was discovered that she has not returned the police kits in her possession and has been using same to obtain goods and services from unsuspecting members of the public under false pretences.

Two armed robbery suspects, who confessed to being members of the ”Eiye Confraternity”, were also paraded by the state police.

The duo together with others at large, were said to have attacked one Adegbite Yinka, in his residence at Omi Adio area of Ibadan about 8.30pm on November 30, 2017.

They were alleged to have dispossessed their victim of his Jewelleries after inflicting injuries on him.

One English-made Berretta pistol was recovered from the gang.

Another robbery gang, made up of three men and another one man gang were also arrested and paraded, while a criminal receiver of stolen goods, Samson Olugbenga,aka “Marshal” were also arrested during the period.

The “receiver”, aged 46, was nabbed in his hide out in Ogbomoso on December 8,2017. He was said to have received several snatched vehicles from an armed robbery gang which was smashed recently by the police.

One Yusuf Ishola, 30, was arrested by the police on December 19, 2017,with 294 pieces of counterfeit 1000 Naira notes in his possession.

Ishola is said to be notorious for using counterfeit currency notes to buy goods from traders around Ogbomoso town.

One Farouk Ibrahim, was also paraded for breaking into a bureau de change shop at Sabo area of Ibadan on December 23,2017.

He was said to have stolen the sum of Six million, two hundred thousand Naira, belonging to one currency trader, Musa Kaka.

The Commissioner of Police attributed the peace currently being enjoyed in the state to several factors.

“His words; “The currently being enjoyed in the state would have been elusive, but for the support of the Governor and people of the state, cooperation with sister agencies and more importantly, the understanding and unflinching support of the media”.
