The Nigeria Union of Journalists (FCT) Council, has urged balanced and objective reportage of the activities of security forces in the interest of national security and stability.
Chairman of the Council, Comrade Chuks Ehirim, in a statement in Abuja, said the call has become imperative in the face of reports from some section of the media without clarification of issues as regards the operation of security forces in the states affected by the State of Emergency.
According to Ehirim, “the ethics of the profession is anchored on balance and objectivity and once these are lacking, it cast doubts on the authenticity of your reports.”
The NUJ chairman also observed that the action of the security forces was to ensure that all Nigerians live in peace and security without fear of becoming targets of extremists.
While commending the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), for the effective coordination of the operations of the military in safeguarding the territorial integrity of the country, he appealed to the office to ensure that the forces abide by the rules of engagement to minimise civilian casualty.
