NUC Denies Knowledge Of 2013 Varsities Ranking

The  National Universities Commission (NUC) has said that the purported 2013 ranking of top 100 universities in the country did not originate from any of its research activities.
The Commission in a statement issued in Abuja yesterday described the ranking which according to it has started circulating on the internet as non-existence.
“It has to be stated, unequivocally, that the lists did not emanate from the NUC.  The Commission therefore totally dissociates itself from them”.
In the said ranking, University of Ibadan was number one followed by University of Lagos, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, University of Ilorin, University of Benin, University of Jos, University of Maiduguri, University of Agriculture, Abeokuta and University of Portharcourt.
NUC said that the first ranking of Nigerian universities it carried out in 2002 was based on the performance of the universities’ academic programmes in the 1999 and 2000 accreditation exercises.
It added that the 2004 ranking was based on data on percentage of academic programmes of the university with full accreditation status, compliance with carrying capacity (measure of the degree of deviation from carrying capacity) and proportion of the academic staff of the university at professorial level.
Others include foreign content (staff),foreign content (student), staff with outstanding academic achievements and research output among others
It stressed that the results of the ranking were duly published noting that it has been conducting the accreditation of the programmes offered by Nigerian universities since 1990.
“In May, 2006, it considered introducing institutional accreditation to complement programme accreditation.
Institutional accreditation is a process of evaluating the activities of an institution against the criteria established by an accrediting agency.
These include governance and administration, financial stability, admissions, personnel services, institutional resources, student academic achievement, institutional effectiveness, and relationships with constituencies inside and outside the institution” the statement said.
