Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige has tasked the new Executive Management of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, NSITF to vigorously pursue the total implementation of the Employee Compensation Act.
The Minister bared his mind on the Act when he received the newly appointed Executive Management of the NSITF led by the Managing Director, Bayo Somefun.
According to him, “the Employee Compensation Act is a national law which is not meant for the Federal Government alone, “noting that all employers in both the public and organized private sector must key into the Act”
While congratulating the new management team of NSITF for their well-deserved appointment, Ngige affirmed that the responsibilities before the team are enormous, prominent of which according to him is to ensure that workers are adequately compensated during workplace related accident that could lead to injury, disability or death.
The Minister assured the team of his ministry’s readiness to support them in the realization of the objective of the Employee Compensation Act.
He further urged the Somefun led team to design a work plan that will serve as its roadmap.
“You must come up with an action plan so that you can be able to achieve milestones because the job in NSITF is very huge. Let me also warn you that it is not a tea-party as the act makes provision for you to brief Mr. President at the end of the year with a comprehensive report on your achievements.”
Ngige demanded the submission of three years outstanding report of NSITF “The first assignment am giving you is to submit the three years pending annual report of NSITF for onward transmission to Mr. President” The Minister directed
“I must congratulate you and urge you to read the Act that establishes the fund, including some Convention of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), particularly Convention 102, because that is where you have Employment Compensation for workers which we later transited into ECA” Ngige concluded.
Earlier in his remarks, the Managing Director of NSITF, Bayo Somefun appreciated the Minister for providing purposeful leadership to the Ministry and by extension NSITF. He said. “Thank you for how far you have led the Ministry and we are here to tell you that we are ready to partner with you to take NSITF to an enviable height.”
