Brazil’s Neymar has been banned for four matches after being sent off at the Copa America and will play no further part in the tournament, the South American football federation CONMEBOL said on Friday.
The striker was dismissed at the end of Brazil’s defeat by Colombia on Wednesday for his part in a fracas after the final whistle.
CONMEBOL said in a statement that Brazil had the right to appeal against the decision, adding that the player had also been fined $10 000.
The South Americans have one remaining group match, against Venezuela on Sunday, and could then face three knockout matches if they reach the final.
Neymar was central to the incident that marred the end of the game at Santiago’s Monumental Stadium two days ago.
