NASS Crisis: OYO APC Reads Riot Act To National Assembly Members

Chris Steven, Abuja

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo state has vowed to sanction any of its members found to have worked against the emergence of the consensus candidates nominated for the principal offices in both Chambers of the 8th Assembly which was inaugurated amidst controversies on June 9, 2015.

Both the Senate and the House of Representatives of the 8th National Assembly have been enmeshed in an apparent intractable war of attrition over the choice of members to man various principal offices as this predated their inauguration and the ensuing horse trading have not abated weeks after.

The Oyo state chapter of the ruling APC, in a statement issued by its Director of Publicity and Strategy, Olawale Sadare on Tuesday, regretted the development which it said was the handiwork of some over-zealous people within and outside the APC who were averse to the change project as programmed by President  Muhammadu Buhari and the national leadership of the party.

“As patriotic citizens and committed change agents, the leadership and members of the APC in Oyo State are embarrassed by the current situation in both chambers of the national Assembly. And as a responsible and loyal chapter which appreciates party supremacy as being fundamental, we identify with the position of the national headquarters of our great party which revolves around decency, discipline and national interest.

“We are very much aware of the inglorious roles being played by some of our members elected as federal lawmakers who conspired with the PDP elements to truncate the painstaking efforts of the APC to guide the majority members on the choice of leadership that could work with Mr. President to deliver on his promises and move the country to an unprecedented height in no time.

“Specifically, we watched on television how a particular member of the House of Assembly from the state was manhandled by his colleagues before he was rescued in his torn clothes.

This development caused the good people of the Pacesetter state a monumental embarrassment as the said victim  got the disgraceful treatment in his attempt to safeguard his personal interest following his earlier disregard of the directive on the party’s choice candidates for the principal offices.

“Therefore, the party has summoned the said lawmaker and another one, who got into the House for the first time, to explain their roles in the whole saga and the public is assured that the duo and any other Senator or House of Representatives members found to have participated in the June 9 saga to the disadvantage of the APC, and Nigeria as a whole, would be summarily dealt with in accordance with the Constitution of the party.” Sadare stated.

Meanwhile, the party lauded the leadership and members of the APC in Ibadan North Local Government over what it called their demonstration of understanding, cooperation and solidarity in the course of laying a foundation of peace and harmony for the 8th Assembly inauguration which the party elders successfully facilitated on June 10, 2015.
