Man Petitions Police Over Alleged Harassment, Destruction of Properties

Paul Obiajunwo, Port Harcourt

Mr. Samuel Nnanta Jonah, the Chief Security officer of  Rumuekini Community in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State has through his legal team petitioned the Rivers State police command  over what he described as  incessant raid, intimidation, harassment and destruction of his properties. He said after raiding his home a month ago, the same Police under the aegis Joint Task Force (JTF) invaded his hotel and family house, destroyed and burnt properties killed some domestic animals including his dog but could not arrest him.

Briefing The post at the weekend, Mr. Samuel said those who arrested him are yet to inform him of his offence, “On 21st June, 2015 the said policemen destroyed my properties. On 16th of October, over 20 police vehicles went to my house and hotel to destroy my properties, burnt some and killed some of my domestic animal. Don’t forget that I was detained for over two months and I was released on 17th of August, 2015. I have called SOS, Anti -Kidnap Patrol and Anti-Cultism Patrol all of them denied of knowing which Police patrol team raided my house and hotel.  I don’t want to speak further on this issue, my Lawyer will ensure that justice is done on this matter.

His Lawyer Mr. Higher King, a Human Right activist said the recent raid at the home of his client is making it twice. He said he is unhappy that the Rivers State Police Command is yet to claim responsibility of the harassment, destruction of the properties and intimidation against  his client. He wondered which police would be raiding the house of his client even when he had before now arrested, taken to Abuja and released without been accused of anything bordering on crime or cultism.

Mr. King said he had petition the Inspector General of Police and copied the Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki, the Speaker House of Representative, Hon. Yakubu Dogara and member representing Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency, Hon. Kingsley Chinda to look into what he described as police rascality. He noted that his client has been wrongfully arrested, detained, harassed and subjected to untold psychological trauma.

He said what is happening to his client is an injustice that is being meted to a fellow Nigerian. “We are in the habit of making sure that injustice to one is injustice to all, no matter who the person is, whether rich or poor. It is all about my client, Samuel Jonah Nnanta, Chief Security Officer (CSO) of Rumuekini community in Obio/Akpor Local government area of Rivers State.  He was arrested in June, the anti robbery and kidnapping squad came to his hotel and vandalized properties belonging to my client,  the building was de-roofed, two persons were killed. And after the whole thing, I told him to go the police and report the matter he did. He was arrested when he got there and over a month he was in detention, they said an order came from above from Adeniji Police station in Lagos. So I went to Lagos and met the Deputy Commissioner of Police who told me an order has come from Abuja that my client should be transferred to Abuja and he was transferred to Abuja. When he got there he was still detained for weeks after that he was released. Yesterday curiously we saw policemen numbering over one hundred in twenty vehicles, they went into their house the same place they invaded before, killed dogs, brought out their mattresses, machines,  burnt them and destroyed the window glasses I don’t know why such a thing should happen.

“We are calling on the authorities that his rights have been violated for two months. We are already making a case about that before this recent development. The properties destroyed worth over 200 million,  the Rivers State police are saying they don’t know the policemen that came to destroy those properties.  It was an operation that lasted for over two hours with shooting and the police are saying they didn’t hear it. These policemen came in uniform, I saw them and other people saw them too and the police are saying they don’t know them. I have personally contacted the anti- cultism that arrested him initially and they told me that they are not aware. He has also contacted some other police stations like Choba Police Station that covers his area and they said they are not aware. Where did these policemen come from because up till now we have not heard anything? We are calling on the commissioner of Rivers State Police to immediately produce those Policemen; we don’t know why they came there. The man has been released and cleared of all charges.”

Mr. King continued, “the petition we wrote was dated 17th of August 2015, we wrote to the Inspector General of Police of the Federal Republic of Nigeria after that we copied the senate president. We also wrote them personal letters, we copied the Senate President, speaker House of Representatives we also copied Kingsley Chinda the member representing Obio/ Akpor were this incident happened. None of them have done anything up till now. We are suspecting something, we are not ruling out political coloration because he is a member of PDP. Don’t forget as Chief Security officer of his community, on 15 of October, he handed over to the police some suspected cult boys. The records are there that was a day before his house was invaded.  Does it mean a man who has been found worthy of being the chief security officer of his community should not do his job. But what we are after here is human right violation. He was detained for two months from Port Harcourt to Lagos and Abuja. Maybe they will take him again to the world council or the Privy Council or the world court. I don’t know where they want to take. Police couldn’t charge him for anything now we are the ones charging the police for violation of human right.”

When contacted the Rivers State Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), Muhammad Kidaya Ahmad, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) on the matter he refuses to pick his calls. A text message detailing the matter was also forwarded to his phone but he could not reply untill the press time.
