Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honorable Suleimon Lasun Yussuff has challenged speakers of state house of assemblies to rescue the local government system from its imminent collapse.
The Deputy Speaker who Represented the Speaker of the House, Honorable Yakubu Dogara gave the charge at the opening ceremony of a one day Consultation meeting of the House of Representatives Committee on Inter- parliamentary Affairs and the Conference of Speakers .
He stated that the local government system has lost its value while grassroot people who the system is meant to serve are not feeling its impact.
The Deputy Speaker maintained that the various states assemblies could still rally to ensure that the system is revitalized noting that local government is the closest to the people.
Honorable Lasun urged the states assemblies speakers to go and look at the system with a view to correcting the problem that has brought the local council into a shadow of itself.
“The system is almost gone. It is a sorry case that the system is fading out and the effect is on the people. The poverty in our community is becoming unbearable”. He said
The Deputy Speaker who also spoke about the local government financial autonomy, tasked the speakers on the need to begin to work in that direction so that the third tier of government could serve the people at the grassroots.
He stated that local government financial autonomy is very important, adding that it is for the benefit of all of Nigerians.
“Governance can only be felt at the state level if the local government system is functional and effective, please go back and do something about it, we should be men of history not men of moment. Let us sanitize the system”, he added.
