Confirmation that President Goodluck Jonathan would contest the 2015 Presidential election came on Sunday as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur said that a much younger member of the party would take over government from him in 2019.

The National Chairman, who said he had dreamt that a much younger member would take over government in 2019, added that President Jonathan had already laid the foundation for the Nigerian youths to spearhead the political and economic engineering of Nigeria.

Tukur, who said this in Abuja on Sunday when members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Anambra branch paid him a visit at his residence, urged them to take the advantage right away while not sitting on the fence any longer.

Tukur said that the future of Nigeria belonged to the youths, just as he urged them to start early preparations towards taking over in all endeavours.

The 2015 Presidential election is already shaping up to be a contentious one with Jonathan facing a fight within his own party from many who do not want him to stand for a second term.

A breakaway faction of the party, floated by seven governors and the former Vice Presdent Atiku Abubakar is contesting for the control of the PDP.

Tukur told the students that the era of gerontocracy was gone in Nigeria, a reason the PDP has begun to look in the direction of the youths to handle higher political offices.

He said the PDP’s support for the youths was the reason it resolved to stand by its governorship candidate in Anambra, Tony Nwoye, notwithstanding the rumblings that have been characterizing preparations by the party for the governorship election in the South-Eastern state.

The spokesman for the Anambra students, Mr. Danielson Tony, expressed misgivings on the crises within the PDP as he commended the Chairman for the wisdom, understanding and the maturity he had so far exercised in managing the crises.

He lamented that the uncertainty within the ruling party had been impacting negatively on its preparations for the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 16, expressing regrets on the use of court by members of the party in Anambra to throw a spanner on the wheels of the party in its preparations for the governorship election.

He, however, assured the PDP Chairman of the preparedness by the youths in Anambra to mobilise support for Tony Nwoye during the governorship election.
