INEC Acknowledges Receipt Of Petition To Recall Dino Melaye

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Thursday acknowledged receipt of petition submitted by some registered voters from Kogi West Senatorial District to kick start the process of recalling Senator Dino Melaye.

The commission, in a statement by Mallam Mohammed Haruna, its National Commissioner & Member, Information and Voter Education Committee, said it had conveyed letter notifying Melaye of the petition.

“The next step is to verify that the petitioners are registered voters in the Kogi West Senatorial District,” adding that on July 3, 2017, it would issue a public notice stating when exactly it would carry out the verification exercise.

Taking to his twitter handle on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Senator apparently laughed off the recall threat, saying “it cannot succeed. It is a hoax and absolute comedy of errors. I’m laughing at the stupidity of Kogi State government.

Many appointees, he continued, “will go to jail for forgery. Even dead people’s names on the recall register.

“A governor who does not know what double registration is, may not as well know the procedure for recall. Every lie has an expiry date. This comedy of errors will soon end. No shaking at all. This won’t solve the problem of not paying salaries for over 15 months.

“No retreat no surrender. Truth is my only defence,” he concluded.

On Thursday, the Senator canvassed jail terms for the hatchet men used by Governor Yahaya Bello to collect the recall signatures, blasting the governor for “embarrassing literacy…”

For him, “the speed with which Governor Bello got over 180,000 signatures deserve the attention of (the) Guinness Book of Records, (compared with the) less than 112,000 (that) voted in 2015.”
