There was tension yesterday as some gunmen abducted seven expatriate oil staff working with Bourbon International Oil Limited, along Pennington rig, offshore near Ezetu, Southern Ijaw local government of Bayelsa State.
The kidnapped expatriates, six Russians and one Estonian, were on board their vessels with eight other oil workers when the gunmen struck in the early hours of yesterday.
The where about of the expatriates is not known as at press time and no group has claimed responsibility for the action.
Bourbon International Oil Limited is an oil-servicing firm working for Chevron Nigeria Limited its vessel registration number is Bourbon Liberty 249.
It was learnt that eight workers other workers on board the vessel have arrived the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) seaport at Onne, Rivers State.
Spokesman of Joint Military Task Force (JTF), Lt. Col. Onyema Nwachukwu confirmed the abduction of the expatiates and said the vessel was sailing from Pennington Offshore Terminal located 16 miles of Fishtown river.
Nwachukwu said Naval personnel and other Military formations in the Niger Delta have launched a manhunt into creeks to rescue the expatriates
“I can confirm to you that some unknown gunmen attacked a vessel and abducted seven persons made up of six Russians and One Estonian national. We have deployed our Naval elements to comb the area and track down the kidnappers. We have also alerted all operational base.”
