Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Rivers State Command says it has arrested over 2600 vehicles for not complying with the installation of the Speed Limiting Device.
The corps which said the arrest was part of its enforcement strategy for motorists to comply with the SLD noted that 30 percent of the number of vehicles arrested had their device installed.
Commander, Rivers State Sector Command, Mr. Andrew Kumakpayi, disclosed this on yesterday at a health programme organized for Tanker Drivers in the state in collaboration with Nigerian Medical Association and Medical Women’s Association of Nigerian.
Speaking at the event which also commemorates FRSC health week, Kumapayi noted that the compliance level of motorists in the state in respect of the installation was encouraging.
Kumapayi warned that strict measures would be applied on commuters who failed to comply, adding that it had intensified campaign on the need for people to have the device installed.
He said, “We have care for drivers because we want drivers to drive safely on the roads. Most drivers do not have time to go for medical attention so there is need to provide this help for them to check their sugar level, Blood Pressure and their Eyes.
“We have arrested close to 2600 vehicles. About 30 percent of them have their device installed already. They have a time line to install the device. After the deadline, strict measures will be used on people who failed to comply. Anyone we arrest will pay the sum of 50,000 naira or be prosecuted.
“I think compliance level now in Rivers State is encouraging. We are moving from one motor pack to another sanitizing the drivers on the need to have the device installed in their vehicles.”
Meanwhile, the State Chairman of NMA, Dr. Datonye Alasia, said the propramme was to help Tanker drivers to know the importance of knowing their health status.
Alasia, who spoke through, Dr. Ejele Irabor, noted that it was important for drivers to have sound health before driving on the roads.
He averred that most accident on the roads were caused by failing health conditions of the drivers and encouraged them (drivers) to always go for medical checkup.
“Sight has been one of the challenges drivers have. Some of them do not go for eye sight test and obtain certificate before going for driver’s license. Road Safety should ensure that anybody who goes drive a car has gone for eye sight test and is certified.”
