Fire gutted the popular multi-million Naira Akande Market in Ogbomoso, the second largest city in Oyo State on Tuesday, just as the traders have closed their shops for the day and were about setting off for their various homes.
According to an eye witness report, No fewer than 30 shops with goods worth hundreds of million of Naira was affected by the inferno.
Another usually-reliable source told Guardian that the incident which started around 7 pm affected a whole section of the market.
A victim whose shop was affected claimed that the traders tried to reach out to men of the state fire service in the town, but to no avail, as there was no immediate response to the incident.
Her words; ” we placed several calls to the fire station immediately after fire broke out in the market, but they told us that they had logistics challenges, whatever, that meant.
” If they had come earlier ,the fire would have been contained in time and they could have prevented it from spreading to other shops.
”The situation was not helped by the dry climate occasioned by the current harmattan”.
The cause of the incident is yet to be ascertained, however, many of the traders were seen trying to salvage what is left of their various wares, while some policemen have been drafted to the scene of the incident, to prevent looting or stealing.
Some of the traders are also planning to make concerted efforts to reach out to the state government for assistance.
