Endorsement Of Buhari For Second Term Is Not IYC Position

BY ISAAC OLAMIKAN

Barrister Roland Pereotubo Oweilaemi, President of the Ijaw Youth Council(IYC), has distanced the national body from the purported endorsement of President Muhammadu Buhari for a second tenure in office by the Abuja Chapter of the body.
According to Barrister Oweilaemi: “The position of the Abuja Chapter did not reflect the views of the Ijaw nation over 2019 elections. “IYC or the Ijaw nation have not taken any decision on whom to endorse for the 2019 Presidential race.
“The Abuja Chapter did not has the mandate, consent and authority of the National body and indeed the Ijaw nation to take such rash decision.”
Going further, Oweilaemi stressed: “The Ijaw nation will definitely take position on 2019 but such can only be a product of wide consultations. The interest of the IYC is for the Ijaw nation and thus, our interest in 2019 can only be considered based on the collective wishes of Ijaw people.
“As a President whose primary interest is for the Ijaw man, the National body has already scheduled a meeting with the Abuja Chapter for the latter to review its spur-of-the-moment endorsement of the ruling government.
“The said endorsement is totally outside the knowledge of the national body and that is what we are trying to correct.
“The Council therefore appeal to our teeming supporters and those who may have been injured by the unauthorised endorsement to maintain calm, while we tackle the Abuja chapter for the purpose of correcting the political miscalculation.”
