Ember Month: Safety Expert Decries Over Road Accident

Takes awareness campaign to motor parks

Paul Obiajunwo, Port Harcourt

A safety expert, Mr. Bob Festus Onukwube at the weekend organized a sensitization campaign to create awareness for all motorists on the need to apply safety measures while driving especially on these Ember months.

The awareness which was carried out in collaboration with Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Rivers State sector command was taken to Motor Park and other bus- stops in the city of Port Harcourt.

Speaking to our reporter shortly after the awareness campaign, Onukwube said he derives joy in investing his money, time and energy on a project that will reduce road accident in the region.

He said the purpose of the sensitization campaign was to create awareness to drivers and passengers on the need to be cautious of safety and to abide by the driving rules to avoid or reduce accident on the road.

He noted that most of his mates are there thinking about kidnapping for ransom, bombing of oil and gas facilities and other criminality but he choose to contribute to human life.

He called on government, privilege individuals and private section to reduce criminality in the region through their contribution and encouragement to youth with positive idea, adding that companies and individual who had promised to support the campaign disappointed him.

Onukwube said: “ I decided to embark on this project because of passion I have for the life of others. Each time I see accident on the road I feel I own the society a responsibility as safety officer. I know  every accident that happened there must be a human error.

“So there is need to educate people especially drivers on how to adhere to safety measures while driving. Even the passengers also need safety education because if the passengers are educated about the safety rules they can correct drivers while going astray to safety rules.

“With the poor response I got from those I was hoping would sponsor the awareness campaign, I think there is important to assist positive ideas from our youth than spending enough for amnesty and other means to reduce crime. Because, if don’t encourage positive mind, then criminality would be on the increase.”
