In a chat with media men in his office in Benin City, the ADP chairman stated that his party is not in doubt about the sincerity of Governor Obaseki and the chairman of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission(EDSIEC), Professor Stanley Orobator.
“We are participating in this forthcoming local council elections seeing that Governor Obaseki is sincere about it. He is different from the other governors.
“There is this notion that the local council election result is normally written by state governments even before the elections are held. But we have cause to believe that Godwin(Obaseki) will not do such a thing. That’s what’s encouraging us to participate in the poll.
“Also, going by the antecedent of the EDSIEC chairman, Professor Stanley Orobator whom we all know too well we are confident of having a level playing field for the election. “He has given us his words and we are holding on to it that there would be a free and fair election. He also promised to announce the results at the various units, wards and local government areas.
“With this we are flagging-off our campaign in Edo North and Edo Central on Saturday, February 24 to sensitise people about our programmes, “he submitted.
On what steps the ADP is taking to ensure that it upstage the ruling party in the state the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the council polls, Hon. Oloruntobi said: “we are placing much emphasis on our name, logo and manifesto. We also embrace women and youths unlike the other political parties that are fond of recycling old politicians.
“A look at the profile of most of our candidates will reveal that they are fresh and young graduates with lofty ideas on how to move the state forward. Before now it has always been the same old politicians with their old ideas. ADP’s slogan is ‘a credible alternative’.
He appealed to the law enforcement agents to be proactive in their duty of protecting hoodlums from committing electoral fraud.
“Governor Obaseki has promised to improve the security situation in Edo State and we trust that he will do just that.”
On how ADP will entrench party supremacy in its fold, Hon. Oloruntobi stressed that the party is not demanding for money from its candidates before given them nomination forms.
“We are not demanding for money from our candidates before giving them nomination forms. Also, EDSIEC is making its form free for all the candidates.
“In such a situation our members when they are in elective position will not revolt against the party’s decisions and thus party supremacy will be of great consideration to them,” he divulged.
Oloruntobi disclosed that the ADP will be fielding 40 candidates (3 chairmanship and 37 councillorship) for the polls which is tentatively fixed for Saturday, March 3.
