Doctors’ Strike Politically Motivated – Kogi Health Commissioner

The current face off between the Nigerian Medical Association(NMA )and Kogi State government was politically motivated and posed a lot of danger to Health Sector.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Saka Haruna Audu who disclosed this while speaking during the Minsterial briefing at NUJ Secretariat, Lokoja yesterday, said the on going strike is threatening Health Sector.

He explained that while the State government was trying to dialogue with the striking doctors,they were demanding for too many things which could not be realised.

,He further stressed that last salaries payment was cut across the board, saying that striking doctors failed to see reasons with the government.

The Commissioner explained that the State government has not sacked any doctor from the State, adding expect those who have voluntarily resigned their appointments.

Dr.Haruna stated that those will to return are free to do so, stating that despite the strike 85 percent of the State Health facilities are functioning according.
On why the State Government adopted Corps members doctor, the commmissioner pointed out that the state government can not allow the on going.g strike to create vacuum and the hence the corps member doctors were drafted.

He highlighted some of the achievements of the present administration such as fixing of five zonal hospitals adequately supplied with modern medical equipment, free medical out reach in towns like Lokoja, Ankpa,Idah, Dekina and others.

Others are 5000 kogites participated in in aptitude test and doctors, nurses, Pharmacists and other critical personnel were recruited, the State government has keyed in to federal government safe one million lives which was tagged Bello health Intervention.

The state government has done well in the areas of maternal/ child intervention programme in the State
