Court remands senator Melaye in Kogi

A  Senor Magistrate Court sitting I Lokoja has  denied the senator
representing Kogi West senatorial district, Senator Dino Melaye bail . as the gave order to remand him under
the custody of the  Inspector General of Police.
In his ruling, the Senior Magistrate  Sulyman Abdullah stated that the
has discretion to grant an refuse the bail as the case may be.
He explained that  the case against the fourth defendant, senator
Dino Melaye carrels more ten three years sentence if found guilty.
Abdallah ordered the1st and 2nd defendants to policy custody as
requested by the prosecution counsel. D r. Alex Izinyon / stressing
that Senator Melaye should be under the protective custody of Inspector General of Police.
The case has been adjourned until June 11.
Wt this development. the senator representing Kogi West will be
detained for 9 days  under the protective custody of IGP
Senator Dino Melaye and two others, Kabiru Seidu. A.k,a Osama and
Nhuhu Saslishu have been arraigned  before the senior  magistrate court sitting in Lokoja on 7 count charges  of conspiracy and illegal
possession of firearms contrary to section o 97 subsections of penal
code as contained in a 7 pages affidavit.
Earlier the leading prosecution counsel, Dr. Alex  Ixinyon had
a submitted written application which withdraws the charged against one
Mohammed Audu, calling on the court not grant bail to senator Melaye.
The prosecution counsel who advanced the reasons why the serving
a senator should not granted bail, adding that the senator may jump
bail and may pervert the cause of police investigation.
He argued that section 156 of Kogi State criminal Administration of

justice law stated that the offence is not lailable.

Izinyon, therefore, urged the court to specifically be remanded in
prison custody.
However, the defendant counsel. Mr. Mike Ozokhome  SAN  argued that
the senior magistrate court has the discretion rant bail to Senator
Dino Melaye on self recognition,
Ozokhome who cited relvant authorities for his oral bail application
sated that Senator Melaye is one of best senators o f the Federal
Republic of Nigeria. Stressing that if granted bail , he will stand
his trial.
Senator Melaye who was brought to court from Abuja in a police
ambulance with registration number NPF 22144D  and was wheeled on
Hospital stretcher into Magistrate 2 in Lokoja at 9.15 am
There was confusion as to  where Senator Melaye  would remanded as
some police officers were rejecting  that the senator should not be
under police custody,
As at the time of filling this report , the police may have whisked
him away to Abuja.
