More knocks have continued to trail President Muhammadu Buhari’s comment in South Africa on Tuesday that there is a limit to what he can do as Mr. President due to his old age.
One of the opposition parties in the country, the Labour Party (LP) yesterday expressed outrage over the President’s comment describing it as embarrassing.
Buhari was quoted as saying in South Africa that he wish he was head of state as a young man and that at 72, there is a limit to what he can do, adding that what brought him was his love for the country.
National Chairman of the party Alhaji Abdukadir Abdulsalam told reporters on Wednesday in Abuja that President Buhari’s comment was embarrassing more so that he spoke outside the shore of the country.
“This is an expression of failure on his part because when he was campaigning, he gave us the impression that he was hale, healthy, and not fragile, has the capacity, ability and agility to carry out the function of state as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
This is disappointing to us and Nigerians that before we started and get the whistle blown, Buhari has started to thrown in the towel. I think both President Buhari and the APC should tell us the true situation. Is the age of Buhari or both the age and health that is become the problem.
“Two months ago he was telling us he has the capacity to do it, now he is telling us he wishes he is younger and that his age will impact on his performance and that he would not be able to do this job to the satisfaction of Nigerians.
This also means Nigerians have been deceived with the concept of change, the statement means we should not be expecting the change they promise as change goes with dynamism, ability to perform, with political willingness and commitment. But if he is complaining now less than a month, where do we go from here?” Abdulsalam said.
When asked if it was not enough that President Buhari’s appointees also have roles to play, the LP boss said former President Jonathan took responsibility and that no one blames the his ministers and other appointees, adding that all the buck stops and end on his table as the leader.
He added: “President Barack Obama takes charge and responsibility for whatever happens to America, David Cameron the same thing in Britain. All presidents take responsibility for whatever happened. President Buhari and APC should tell us now before it is too late on what is happening to our President Baba Buhari.
