…I’m in charge, says Makarfi
Chris Steven, Abuja
The running and management of affairs of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday were hand over to Ahmed Makarfi-led caretaker committee.
The formal hand over was done by the immediate former Deputy National Chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus in the absence of the former National Chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff.
Sheriff also failed to attend the Monday night peace meeting as he was said to have travelled out of the country to London a day before.
Presenting the handover notes to the caretaker committee on behalf of the immediate past National Working Committee (NWC), Secondus said, “on behalf of the former National working committee, we are here to make formal hand over to the new caretaker committee who will midwife the convention. And we want to assure you that all politics is local.”
“We have to restate here, that all politics are local. Our leaders must go back to the grass root. It is not enough to be in Abuja. It is not enough to say I am strong in Abuja.
It is not enough to say I am former this, I am former that. I am strong here, I am strong there. You must be able to prove your worth in local politics and popularity. We are no longer in government, we no longer have security agencies, we no longer have money. So, what matters is the grass root.” He added
Receiving the hand over note, the former Kaduna state Governor, Ahmed Makarfi said the party is stronger and united now stressing that he is now in charge
He aid: “This is not a meeting to bring individuals or factions together. It is a meeting of relevant organs of the party – the Governors Forum, caretaker committee, the Board of Trustees and the National Assembly Caucus.
“The PDP is stronger and united than it was a year ago and I am fully in charge.
The caretaker committee chairman assured that the committee would abide by its mandate of organising convention and uniting members of the party.
“People wondered why we did not rush into the secretariat after the convention. We were appointed and not elected. That was the reason.
“If the process has hurt anybody, I publicly apologise, and in the spirit of democracy they should embrace dialogue as well.” He said
Speaking on behalf of the governors, Ondo state Governor and PDP Governors’ Forum Chairman, Olusegun Mimiko declared that they were in total support of the caretaker committee taking over the running of the party.
He declared as illegal any other group or persons struggling for power with the committee.
His words: “I speak on behalf of the governors my colleagues that in one accord we support of Sen. Markarfi. We support him because his caretaker committee was properly constituted in accordance with the Constitution of the PDP. Any other body by what ever name or pretension can only be illegal.
“I also with the mandate of the governors appeal to anybody that feels in all this resolution process that he has lost out to come on board so that together we can build and strong and united PDP. But for now in accordance with our constitution the caretaker committee is constitutionally constituted body to run the affairs of PDP.
“I also thank the leadership of the BoT, Prof. Jerry Gana, Sen. Ibrahim and other leaders that have shown leadership in the past few weeks. But for the leadership you have demonstrated and I can discern a deep love for this party in the last few months. I have found out that be it stakeholder or what ever name, I have found out that it is only a difference in perception.
“We are all united in the belief that PDP must wax strong as a strong opposition party, preparing to take over power in 2019. These are definitely happy times for PDP.”
Presiding over the meeting, the BoT Chairman, Sen Walid Jubrin said that the party is convinced that the caretaker committee was validly constituted, and therefore should take over the running of the party.
