Bayelsa United loses N6.2m salary to robbers

Armed robbers  yesterday carted  away N6.2m salary arrears of  players and staff  of Bayelsa United  Football Club  at a popular hotel along Amarata, Yenagoa,Bayelsa State, injuring a security staff of the  club.

The  injured security  staff simply identified as Alami was reportedly shot at a close range  on the face and immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre(FMC) where he is currently receiving medical attention.

The Post was reliably informed that the gunmen numbering about six, stormed the hotel premises  at about 5.30pm  and headed straight to the hotel room being used to pay the salary to players and officials of the football club.

It was  gathered that the  payment  was  being supervised by a coach and erstwhile  Super Eagles International, David Ngodigha, as the suspected robbers  ordered everyone in the room to lie down and zoomed off  the area with the loot.

The  injured  security guard  was said to have attempted to escape from the scene  in a bid to mobilise residents  for a resistance  against the robbers  before he was shot .

In an interview, a teacher  who pleaded anonymity to  National Mirror said the shooting by the armed men forced residents to scamper for safety  and hurriedly shut their shops .

When contacted , Police Public Relations Officer  of the Bayelsa Police Command, Fidelis Odunna, said the Divisional Police Officer(DPO) of the command was yet to intimate him with the details .

Odunna said  operatives of  Nigerian Police would be deployed  to the scene to  investigate the incident.
