The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, (ASUP) Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnics chapter, Bori, Rivers State yesterday suspended all academic activities in the polytechnics to demand the immediate release of their colleague, Mr. Abiye Ogan who was kidnapped at 11pm on Sunday.
ASUP chairman, Kenpoly chapter, comrade Ferry Gberegbe said ASUP took the decision to suspend all academic activities during the congress meeting yesterday in Bori, Rivers State.
Mr. Ogan , a lecturer in the Department of Science Laboratory Technology of the polytechnics was kidnapped by unknown gunmen at 11pm on Sunday.
Gberegbe who spoke on behalf of ASUP on Monday and demanded for the immediate release of the kidnapped victim, yesterday said unless Mr. Ogan is releases to his family no academic activities would take place in the polytechnics.
He said Ogan cannot be in the den of the kidnappers and they will be happy to teach, adding that the environment is not safe for any lecturer of the polytechnics.
Gberegbe said: “All lecturers are advised to stay away from all academic activities till further notice, following our congress meeting today we have suspended all academic activities untill Mr. Ogan is released.
“This is a demonstration of love and sympathy. We are calling on Rivers State government, the State Police command and other security agencies to rescue our brother, friend and colleague. He has not being paid of his salaries and has no money for any ransom. “
