From Paul Obiajunwo, Port Harcourt
The state secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Rivers state chapter located at Igboku Street, D/Line in the heart of Port Harcourt has been razed by fire.
The fire, which was said to have engulfed the building at 4:00am razed all the administrative offices and destroyed all the documents belonging to the unioon.
Though, some of the labour leaders who spoke with us said the inferno was masterminded by some leaders who are desperately bend to ensure that election of the union did not hold.
But an eyewitness, Mr. Ovundah Bekee, the Personal Assistant to the Rivers State chairman of NLC, Mr. Chris Oruge, said: “I was alerted of the fire outbreak at the office around 5:00am. I was the person who called the fire service; I don’t want to comment further because investigation is ongoing. ”
The Vice President of National Union of Chemicals Footwear, Rubber, Leather and Non-metallic Products Employees (A section of the NLC), Comrade Frederick Nwajie whose office was also destroyed by the fire said he could not recover even a pin from my office.
“This whole thing happened when the union has sent out secular for a crucial meeting. As you know our election will be coming up on 23 April.” This whole thing is stage by people who do not want the progress of this union. But the fire cannot stop our meeting, it must hold.”
