APC: ANPP Inaugurates 20-Man National Convention Committee

By Akin Akande, Abuja

Following the last week National Convention of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Lagos where the party was dissolved to be part of the merger arrangements to form the Alliance for Progressive Congress (APC), the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) today inaugurated a 20-man committee to organise its own national convention.

The convention committee is chaired by the Zamfara State Governor, Abdulazeez Yari, while Honourable Emma Eneukwu, the party National Publicity Secretary was appointed as the Secretary.

Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu , ANPP National Chairman, while inaugurating the Committee,  said by the merger, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should be prepared to be in the opposition after next general elections.

“With this merger which, by the grace of Almighty God, would soon be completed, it is certain that the way politics is played in our country will change forever.  Our dear country will never be the same again.  Those in government today should prepare their minds to be in the opposition tomorrow”, he said

In his address titled “Time for Change” the ANPP National Chairman that the decision by his party to be part of the merger was a step further to prove to Nigerians that the party believes strongly in the merger of opposition political parties for the benefit of all.

He lamented that the nation is in great distress where people see problems and problems and feel insecure adding that things cannot continue to this way as there must be a change for the better.

This was as he emphasised that the successful takeoff of the merger would change the political landscape in the country saying “with this merger which, by the grace of Almighty God, would soon be completed, it is certain that the way politics is played in our country will change forever”.

His words: It is about going a step further to show our fellow country men and women that we mean what we say that the ANPP strongly believes in the merger of opposition political parties for the benefit of all.  It is about reaffirming our faith in the greatness of our beloved country, as well as the power of democracy as an important instrument of good governance and development, that will long endure.

Our country is in great distress.  Wherever we look, we see problems and problems.  We live in darkness.  People feel insecure.  Our schools and hospitals are not working as they should.  Unemployment and poverty have crippled the dreams and ambition of many Nigerians.  Hope for a bright future has continued to fade for many people, day after day. Things cannot continue this way.  There must be a change for the better.  The time to effect that change, is now.

The common people, the masses of our nation yearn for change.  They know that this change can only come when votes count and the voter matters.  They know that this can only be realised when there is effective competition in the political arena.  They know that major opposition political parties need to come together as a single political party so that politics in our country can be played with two strong political parties.  When this happens, no one can easily pre-determine which of the two political parties can continuously win a general election.

With this merger which, by the grace of Almighty God, would soon be completed, it is certain that the way politics is played in our country will change forever.  Our dear country will never be the same again.  Those in government today should prepare their minds to be in opposition tomorrow”.

The ANPP convention will hold on May 11, 2013 in Gusau, Zamfara state, the same day the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, will hold its convention for a similar purpose.

The party will be holding our National Convention to approve the merger with other opposition political parties and groups.

He urged the committee to work assiduously to organise what he described as the best ever convention in the country.

In his acceptance speech, Zamfara state Governor, Alhaji Abdulazeez Abubakar Yari on behalf of members of the committee gave assurance that they would do a good work to organise the convention.

“We are going to do our best to the best of our ability and In Sha Allah produce the best convention. Go and sleep and be rest assured that we are going to succeed more than ever before. We will work round the clock and ensure that we succeed and produce the best convention” he said
