Anxiety As Four Killed In Rivers Cult Clash
Paul Obiajunwo, Port Harcourt
Four persons were feared dead yesterday,  at different locations in Alode community, Eleme Local Government Area and Asarama community in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers.
The incident in Alode,  which claimed three lives,  was attributed to a reprisal attack  by a  cult group that revenged the murder and razing of their leader’s house.
A person was killed and scores wounded when gunmen attacked Asarama community in Andoni LGA.
The incident was suspected to have been carried out by members of two different groups in the area. It could not be ascertained whether the armed men were members of cult groups.
But the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Andoni  local government, Allen Jonah, had confirmed the attack,  saying that the gunmen invaded the community in the early hours of yesterday.
He said the gunmen shot sporadically and killed  one person on the spot and some persons wounded.
According to him,  the hoodlums struck ahead of a ceremony billed to hold in the community yesterday.
Jonah said: “I woke up in the morning to be informed that gunmen invaded Asarama community. They came into the community in the early hours of yesterday and shot sporadically, thereby killing one person on the spot.
“When I heard about the incident, I immediately contacted the Area Commander  in Andoni and they swung into action. I want our people to remain calm . We are on top of the situation,” he said.
He, however, called on the police and other security agencies to beef up security is that axis of
Rivers State,  to forestall recurrence.
The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO),  Nnamdi Omoni, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP),  had earlier confirmed the incident in  Alode in Eleme,  saying it was  a reprisal by a cult group.
“The incident at Alode Eleme was purely a cult clash and it has nothing to do with police or any security agent. A rival cult group had embarked on a reprisal before the clash,” Omoni added.
However, the police spokesman  could not confirm the attack in Asarama at the time  of filing the report.
