Abia State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Ken Nwosu, was on
Wednesday night shot by yet-to -be identified gunmen on his way to his
country home where he resides after the close of work for the day.

The incident according to the state police command occurred around
Umuajata/ Amakamma road by Stella Inter-Communication in Umuahia South
local government area, at the outskirts of Umuahia capital city.

The Police Public Relations Officer [PPRO], Abia State, ASP Geoffrey
Ogbonna, who confirmed the incident, said the Commissioner was driving
home around 8:05 p.m. when the incident occurred.

According to police source, the Commissioner was reportedly overtaken
by a Toyota Camry car believed to be carrying a group of gun men who
immediately opened fire at him on the lonely road.

Ogbonna said, “The gunmen started shooting at him immediately and
bullet touched his intestines. They continued shooting
indiscriminately believing that they had killed him and also to aid
their escape”.

On the question whether the assailants were assassins, kidnappers or
robbers, the PPRO said, “From the look of things it was obvious they
had a hidden agenda as they did not bother to remove any thing from
him or collect his car, but investigations will unravel their real
motive”.

Police said no arrests had been made but pleaded with members of the
public to volunteer any useful information that might help security
operatives track down the attackers.

At the Abia State Specialist Hospital where doctors are now battling
to save the Commissioner’s life, Chief Medical Director of the
hospital, Professor Augustus Mbanaso told said that the
Commissioner was badly injured at his intestines and femur.

The CMD said the victim’s condition was serious at the point he was
rushed to the hospital.

“When I came to see him, I found that his
intestines gushed out and the blood pressure was low.

He was semi conscious and what we tried to do was to resuscitate him
to a level where he could be operated on immediately,” he said.

“We looked for
all types of infusions, demanded for blood, then sent for an
anesthetist, sent for surgeons who will assist me, made sure all the
nurses were there and the theater paraphernalia carried out,” he added.

Prof Mbanaso also said: “We had to infuse up to four pints of blood on him
before taking him to the theatre, x- ray will be carried out on his
femur to determine the extent of damage on his bone before we know the
next step to take.

“This morning we have reviewed him, I reviewed him by 9am and he is to
respond to my call and a few questions I asked him. He is being
monitored closely; it’s less than 24hours this thing happened”.

He however said continued prayers were needed, noting that, “what we
have done is to give medication but it is God that heals, so, we want
everybody to keep praying for the quick recovery of the Commissioner”.

The CMD who said Governor Theodore Orji had already visited the
victim, adding that surgery had also been conducted on a woman who was
affected by stray bullet of the assailants and that she is responding
to treatment.

This recalled that Dr. Nwosu had been kidnapped years ago when he was
the executive director of National Root Crop Research Institute
Umudike, when kidnapping was staring in the city before the governor
chased kidnappers away.
