Peru floors Super Eagles 1-0

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were on Thursday morning floored 0-1 by the Blanquirrojas of Peru in an international friendly match played at the Estadio Nacional in Lima.
The match was played at high altitude at 8p.m local time (2a.m Nigerian time) and witnessed tense moments, including rough tackles by players of both teams.
The deciding goal of the match was scored in the 37th minute by Paolo Guerrero of Hamburg FC.
Super Eagles handler, Stephen Keshi, had some days ago predicted that the match would be a tough one for the Nigerian side, especially because of the high altitude and the passion of Peruvians for football.
Keshi fielded a team made up mainly of home-based players, just as he did against Egypt in April.
The hosts hit the back of Nigeria’s net when a counter-attack ended with Guerrero’s right-footed low shot into the far post of the Super Eagles net.
Two subsequent efforts to increase the tally failed, hard as the Peruvians tried.
The super Eagles also failed to equalise when a header by Kalu Uche hit the goalkeeper’s back.
According to goal.com, the second half saw Peru make three changes as Guevara, Ampuero and Alvarez came on for Lobaton, Yoshimar and Galliquio.
Nigeria also made changes as Nwankwo Obiorah and Nnamdi Oduamadi came on for the duo of Gabriel and Uzoenyi.
Azubuike Egwueke and Guerrero got into a scuffle when tempers flared as the game wore on. However, it was the visitors who had the upper hand in the second period as they searched for an equaliser.
Keshi’s addition of Raheem Lawal, Gege Soriola and Sunday Mba helped to change the complexion of the game as the Eagles edged possession but could not find the needed opportunity to stun their hosts.
Oduamadi on the left wing kept the Blanquirroja on the defensive but his final ball could not find the needed connection to break the hosts’ defence.
Guerrero almost gave his side another goal from the same situation where he notched the first goal but Agbim managed to get a hand to the ball to give away a corner kick.
Nigeria will take the confidence gained from the encounter into their 2014 World Cup qualification match against Namibia on June 3 in Calabar.
