Impressed by what it described as a good omen for the nation’s education sector, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has commended President Goodluck Jonathan for voting as much as N426 billion to the education sector in the 2013 appropriation bill.
President Jonathan had on Wednesday presented N4.92trillion as the 2013 appropriation budget.
The students’ body while descrbing the President gesture as a right step in the right direction towards the attainment of the age long agitation for the actualization of 26 per cent minimum allocation to education as recommended by UNESCO urged the National Assembly to ensure a timely passage and proper implementation of the bill.
NANS in a statement issued by its National President, Comrade Dauda Mohammed in Abuja yesterday noted that the present administration under President Goodluck Jonathan with the improved budgetary allocation to education is coming to the realisation of the significance of education to national development.
The student’s umbrella body also in the statement urged the federal government to ensure that all those who have been fingered in the killing of the four students of University of Portharcourt are brought to the book.
It also appealed to the university community to remain calm in order to ensure the return of normalcy and reopening of the institution.
“We are grateful that the administration is coming to the realization of the significance of Education to National development and the present commitment of the president Jonathan administration can be seen as a right step in the direction towards the attainment of our age long agitation for the actualization of the 26% minimum allocation to education as recommended by UNESCO.
We therefore urge the National Assembly to compliment this effort by ensuring a timely passage and encouraging proper implementation of the budget.
We want to specifically commend the Honorable Minister of Education Professor Ruqayat Rufai for thge improvement that the Ministry of Education has brought to bear under her leadership of the Ministry.
We want to urge the government to ensure that all those that have so far been fingered in the murder of the 4 students of the University of Portharcourt are made to face the full wrath of the law while we appeal to the university community to remain calm in order to ensure the return of normalcy and reopening of the institution”.
