A Dana Air flight with about 153 passengers on board crashed into densely populated Agege area of Lagos State. Confirming the crash 0f the ill-fated flight from Abuja, Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Harold Demuren said rescue efforts had already started.
Casualty figures are yet unconfirmed though early assessments by those close to the scene was that there was no likelihood that there would be any survivors. Unconfirmed reports, however, said the spokesman for the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Dr. Levi Ajuonoma, was on board.
There were also fears that the crash might have killed others on ground.
Eyewitnesses said the plane struck a two-storey building and burst into flames some thirty minutes later.
The crash drew a crowd of hundreds of of onlookers, forcing the authorities to close adjoining roads to the Toyin Street, Alagbado crash site.The Post understands that rescuers pulled at least one body from the rubble and were searching for survivors, AP news agency said.
Plane wreckage was visible all over the crash site, with the body of the plane lodged into the apartment building.
Firefighters tried to put out the smouldering flames of the jet engine as black smoke billowed.
There were conflicting reports as to whether the flight was arriving in Lagos from the Nigerian capital, Abuja, or was leaving Lagos bound for Abuja when the crash happened.
