Bukola Saraki, President of the Senate, says the nation is sitting on a time bomb waiting to explode with 10.5millon out of school children.
Speaking on the amendment of Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC)Act to provide free and compulsory primary and secondary education for the Nigerian child, Saraki said ” We must get these children back in the classroom”
“With 10.5million out-of-school children in Nigeria, we are sitting on a ticking time bomb.
We have amended the Compulsory, Free, Universal Education Act to make primary and secondary education free and compulsory across the nation.”
He explained that the Senate’s amendment to the UBEC Act “will help more of our 36 States provide free education for primary and secondary school students”.
Saraki noted that with over 10 million out-of-school children in the north, all stakeholders must meet to examine the implications of the Almajiri phenomena.
“The repositioning of the Almajiri educational system in the northern part of the Nigeria is crucial” he added
